The Canada national rugby union team, also known as ‘The Canucks’, are placed in Pool A of the 2011 Rugby World Cup (RWC).  Besides Canada, the other teams in Pool A are France, Japan, New Zealand and Tonga.
As of July 11, Canada is ranked 16 in the International Rugby Board (IRB) World Rankings.  This is the Canada’s seventh consecutive RWC appearance. In their earlier appearance, Canada’s best performance came in the 1991 RWC in which they reached the quarter-finals of the showpiece event. However, their performance in the 2007 RWC was their worst performance in the global tournament to date.
Canada is one of the powerhouses of Rugby in the Americas and is only second to Argentina.  They secured their place in the 2011 RWC by defeating the USA Eagles in an aggregate score of 47 – 30.
The Canucks have recently participated in the ninth edition of the 2011 Churchill Cup, where they reached the Final stage of the cup. They lost the title match to England Saxons but won their other two pool matches against Tonga and Russia.
Canada became the first team to announce their final 30-man squad for the 2011 RWC. The team announced does not include any player who is playing rugby in a foreign club. This was a decision that was taken by former All Blacks international, Kieran Crowley, who is serving as head coach.

The Japan national rugby team qualified for the 2011 Rugby World Cup by defeating Hong Kong in an Asian Five Nations tournament, further enhancing the profile of rugby in Japan. Japan also achieved a significant goal for the future of sport nationally and internationally with the announcement that Japan will host the 2019 Rugby World Cup.
Traditionally the most dominant rugby playing nation in Asia, Japan has participated in every Rugby World Cup since the inaugural 1987 competition in New Zealand, yet they have only won one game at a RWC tournament, which was in 1991 against Zimbabwe.
Rugby was pioneered in Japan in 1899, with Japan’s first international against Canada in 1932. 1968 saw Japan score a notable victory against the Junior All Blacks, and in 1971 lost 6 – 3 to England. During the 2007 Rugby World Cup Japan drew 12 – 12 with Canada, their second best Rugby World Cup result, and Japan’s most renowned international victory was a 28 – 24 win against Scotland in 1989.
Nicknamed the Cherry Blossoms, or Brave Blossoms, and coached by John Kirwan, Rugby World Cup 2011 will hope see the team from Japan working on improving fitness levels and using player’s speed and agility to better its previous performances.
Ranked 13th in IRB world rugby rankings, RWC 2011 finds Japan in Pool A with Canada, France, New Zealand and Tonga. Japan’s opening 2011 Rugby World Cup game will be against France in Auckland on the 10th September, followed by the All Blacks in Hamilton on the 16th September. Japan take on Tonga in Whangarei on the 21st September before their final Pool A clash against Canada in Napier on the 27th September.
Japan will be based at the Silverdale Rugby Club on Auckland’s North Shore from the 31st August to 13th September before travelling to Hamilton for training from 14th – 16th September. Kerikeri will be the base for Japan from 17th – 19th September, followed by Whangeri from 20th – 21st September, and Napier from 22nd – 27th September.
